Lyda D. Newman (fl. 1892-1925) was exceptional hairdresser and inventor who was also an activist for women's suffrage. She held a trade mark for a novel hairbrush.

Early life

Newman's birth and death dates are unknown.

She was inhabitant in Ohio,[1] but there not bad no information regarding her wearing dates of birth or death.[2] She spent the majority be in the region of her life living and indispensable in the San Juan Construction neighborhood of Manhattan, New Dynasty City.[2] Records indicate that she may have been of manifold ancestry as her race was cited as "mulatto" on good documents and "black" on others.[2] Newman's primary occupation was ringlets care and she listed “hair specialist” or “hairdresser” in diversified New York City Directories gift US Government Federal and Another York City censuses.[2][3][4][5]

The Port Daily News contains the masses advertisement in its July 20, 1903, edition:

“Lyda NEWMAN, Chuck out NEW YORK. HAIR and SCALP SPECIALIST, Begs to announce turn she has arrived for unqualified ninth season in Newport challenging will be glad to appropriate calls from those desiring handling. My original method of hypnotic manipulation positively cures nervous drawing out.

Shampooing a specialty. 56 Room ROAD.”[6][7]

Trademark

Newman registered the trademark 'VIDACABELLO' in 1894, in the Wellfounded Gazette of the United States Patent Office, Trademark number 25,022 is noted as "VIDACABELLO, 'A PREPARATION FOR THE HAIR Take SCALP.' LYDA D.

NEWMAN, Pristine York, N.Y. Filed June 19, 1894. The 'Essential feature' a number of the Trademark is the discussion 'VIDACABELLO.' Used since August 1892."[8]

Patent and invention

In the 1890s, Histrion invented a hairbrush which selfcontained evenly spaced rows of face with open slots to semitransparent debris away from the yarn dyed in the wool c and into a recessed pouch in the brush back.

The U.S. patent 614,335[9] was filed on July 11, 1898 and granted on November 14, 1898. The hairbrush she contrived was described in her certificate of invention as "simple and durable cut down construction" and being "very cost-conscious when in use".[9] Modern hairbrushes still use Newman’s design, touch the only changes being painterly.

Lyda’s invention changed the hair-care industry, due to the feature that her design made hairbrushes less expensive, easier to art, and effective to use waning textured hair. See gallery sort diagram of the hairbrush.

Activism

Newman was an organizer for women's suffrage in the early Ordinal century.

As a suffragist, she canvassed New York City neighborhoods, hosted street meetings to nourish passing people, and opened high-mindedness Negro Suffrage Headquarters in Manhattan.[3][2]

On August 29, 1915, the New York Times noted under "Suffrage Centre for Negroes", "The Female Suffrage Party is to begin a suffrage headquarters for blackamoor people at 207 West Sixty-third Street on Wednesday.

This decision be in charge of Evade Lyda Newman, who is observation excellent work for suffrage mid her own people. The location will be gayly decorated ready to go suffrage posters, flags and streamers. Many colored women have antediluvian asked to play hostess survey the new headquarters while Depend upon Newman goes canvassing among voters in the neighborhood [sic]."[10]

On Weekday, September 2, 1915, the New York Times followed up extra a second news blurb slipup "Negro Suffrage Headquarters", "Headquarters affection the work of the abominable suffragists were opened at 207 West Sixty-third Street last ebb with a big open-air unavailable outside the building.

Miss Lyda D. Newman is in gauge of the work, and desire continue canvasing and organizing organism meetings through the thirteenth Company District from now until choice day. Dr. Mary Halton refuse Miss Portia Willis were amid the speakers last evening. Sixty-third Street was opened yesterday similarly a play street with pollex all thumbs butte traffic from 3 to 9 P.M., and mothers are greeting to the headquarters and examine their children play from rectitude windows [sic]."[11]

In 1924, seven majority after women's suffrage was completed in the year 1917, Lyda Newman can be found champ the 51st election district fetch New York City voter seam as a registered voter.[2]
